Calcutta, India ñ More Than Youíve Heard

Calcutta, India ñ More Than Youíve Heard

Calcutta, India ñ More Than Youíve Heard

Calcutta, India is a city known for having a serious poverty problem. While this is true, there is much more to the place.

Calcutta

Calcutta is a colonial city organized during the period of British rule, which means a great majority of it is only one to two hundred years old. Unfortunately, the upkeep in the city has been seriously lacking. Frankly, the place appears to be falling down in most places.

Rejecting the British moniker, the Bengali locals have moved to successfully change the name of Calcutta to Kolkata. The change hasnít really been picked up with any gusto, but there you go.

Kolkata is bursting with people. There may be as much as two times the number of people the city was designed to hold. Unfortunately, a large number of these people live in abject poverty. The poverty level youíve seen in movies and heard about through the work of Mother Teresa exists in spades. It is very bad. If youíre ever disappointed about your station in life, just investigate or visit Calcutta. Youíll find you have nothing to complain about.

From a travelerís perspective, Calcutta is a place that should either be avoided at all costs or a must visit. If you can stand the mass poverty, the city has a surprising artistic underbelly. Art galleries, wild paintings and classic Indian music are on the menu. Huge festivals such as Durga Puja have to be seen to be believed.

If you are going to give Calcutta a go, do not go at any point during June, July or August. While this is the coolest time of the year, it is also monsoon season. Drenching rain and Calcutta are not good mixes.

4 Necessary Steps You Should Take When Thinking About Getting A Tattoo!

4 Necessary Steps You Should Take When Thinking About Getting A Tattoo!

Obviously there is some concern about getting a tattoo because when you get a tattoo, you risk getting an infection, pain and wonder about the possibilities of infectious diseases. The process needs to be better understood.

1. Can I Get Infectious Diseases From Tattoo Needles?

There has been some concern recently regarding transmittable diseases (particularly Hepatitis-B and AIDS [HIV]) and tattoo shops. Just as in a dentist's office, as long as the area is strictly sanitized, your chances for infection will be greatly reduced.

2. Can I Get Aids From Tattooing?

When needles are passed from IDU to IDU and reused without sterilization, some of that blood remains in the syringe and is passed on to the next user. If infected blood is passed, the recipient can become infected with HIV, which leads to AIDS.

Tattooing is VERY different from injecting drugs. The needles used in

tattooing are not hollow. They do, however, travel back and forth

through a hollow tube that acts as an ink reservoir. The tip of the tube is dipped into the ink, which draws a little into the tube.

3. Can My Tattoo's Get Infected?

Not as long as you take care of your new tat. There is a section in the Ebook that covers healing methods in depth. Some people have trouble healing tattoos with colors they are allergic to.

4. What Are Some Bad Things For My New Tattoo?

Once it is healed, there is very little that will screw up a tattoo. The one exception is prolonged exposure to sunlight. (the other is scarring, but that is patently obvious).

Well, unfortunately it is. The newer inks are better at resisting fading

but whatever you do, if you spend lots of time in bright sunlight your

tats will fade (over a lifetime, not over a week). Best to try and keep

them out of bright sunlight.

No one wants to become a cave dweller just to keep their tats looking good, so just use some common sense. Think of your tat as an investment--slather on that sunblock so it doesn't turn into a dark blob.

Tattoo art has become very popular and people are getting tattoo's for lots of reasons. Taking good steps in choosing the right tattoo, getting it applied properly and with the proper care is probably the most important things to consider when thinking about getting a tattoo. Read all you can about tattoo art safety and when you're ready to get your tattoo, you will feel much better about your decision!

5 Safety Tips All Drivers Should Know

According to the 2000 census, more than 112 million people drive or carpool to work daily.

With all these people on the road, drivers need to take every precaution to ensure they arrive safely at their destinations. Here are some tips to heed in your travels.

* Keep your vehicle properly maintained. Follow the recommended service intervals found in your vehicle owner's manual, always monitor hoses and belts, and check filters, spark plugs and fluids. Also, be sure tires are properly inflated and gas levels are sufficient.

* Carry an emergency kit. In addition to standards such as a first aid kit and battery jumper cables, consider adding the Autolite TriGlo safety light to your vehicle emergency kit. Powered by four AA batteries, this compact light serves a dual purpose: It shines like a flashlight and alerts like a flare. Triangular in shape, the TriGlo light can be used as a bright spotlight or as a blinking safety triangle to warn oncoming traffic of a motorist's presence.

* Buckle up. When lap and shoulder belts are used correctly, they reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passengers by 45 percent and the risk of moderate to critical injury by 50 percent.

* Know your route. Before hitting the road, take the time to map out your route. Motor clubs such as AAA provide auto travelers with maps and detailed directions to their destinations. Be aware of traffic, construction and weather advisories along your route so you can make alternate plans should these conditions affect your drive.

* Reduce driver distraction. Traffic, construction and careless drivers are distractions beyond your control. However, you can reduce the risk of an accident by decreasing the distractions inside your vehicle.

For instance, to avoid the glare from overhead lights used by your passengers, consider a product such as the Autolite SpotGlo seatbelt light source. This compact, battery-operated recessed light clips easily onto a passenger's seatbelt and slides smoothly on the strap for desired positioning. It directs a powerful LED light source right where passengers need it, without distracting the driver.

No matter where you're headed, heed these suggestions to arrive safely at your destination. Happy travels!  - NU

5 Songwriting Tips For The Lazy

5 Songwriting Tips For The Lazy

5 Songwriting Tips For The Lazy

It's funny, being a songwriter myself, I always find that writing songs can sometimes be a chore. But why does it feel this way? Isn't this supposed to be my passion? Isn't this supposed to be something that I never get bored of?

Ö well, not exactly. Everything gets boring once in a while, even the things that youíre most passionate about. So every so often I like to take the lazy man's route to doing things. And surprisingly, I often produce some very good results!

So listen up. If you newbie at songwriting, or even if you have been at it for a while -- I'm going to a couple of simple tricks that will help you start the writing process within minutes.

Here we goÖ

1) Review a particular situation in your day. It could be at work, during your travels, or at home. It could be with your workmates, your family or your friends. Just any situation that affected you in either a positive or negative way.

An example of this would be "when you're at work, your boss just keeps hounding you. But, the only thing that keeps you going throughout the day is that you know that somebody in the office has a crush on you"

(the above is a very dry exampleÖ but try to work with me here!)

2) Write down as many words as you can think of that relate to your situation.

Let's follow the example from earlier on:

anger, pain, sad, happy, excitement, nervousness, anxious, misery, impatience, relaxation, goofy, sophisticated, annoying, frustrating, antagonising, fancy, sexy, cool, pretty, smile, etc, etcÖ you get the point :-)

3) Write down random short sentences about your situation including the words that you mentioned him step 2. So let's continue in our little experimentÖ

ì the way he talked to me really angers meî

ì if only he knew the pain I suffered insideî

ì when I see her pretty eyes light up it makes me smileî

ì I have to act cool and sophisticated -- don't want to get frustratedî

ì he doesn't know what makes my day go byî

ì don't want to be in this misery for much longerî

Etc, etc. at this point it's important to note that you don't have to use all the words that you mentioned earlier in step two. As you can see Iíve even started to make up my own lines *without* any of the words too! Sometimes, I'm rhyming the words without even realizing. And this is exactly where the magic starts to happenÖ

You can easily turn this idea into a full-fledged song. Use rhymezone.com to help you find words that rhymeÖ and also other related words as well.

My example was very average and simplified -- but you can use an example that's a little more dramatic. You should really get wild with your ideas! Really, just let loose.

4) Listen to a ëbacking trackí (an instrumental of a song) that you have NO CLUE about. While itís playing, make up a melody. Doesnít have to be perfect, just create a melody on the fly. You donít have to sing any lyrics either. Just ëhummí or ëlaaaí a tune out until youíre hearts content.

Why do this? This is an exercise that will subconsciously preparing you to create melodies for youíre own chord sequences in the next step.

5) Create a SIMPLE chord progression on the guitar or keyboard. When I say simple, I mean *simple*. Maybe TWO chords for the verse and TWO chords for the chorus. Now create a melody on top of that chord progression. Record the song on tape. There you have it.

NOTE: if you donít play an instrument, then hook up with someone who does. After all, you pretty much have half the song now :-)

Still think itís difficult conceiving an idea? Want to know more? I have *plenty more* that I want to share with youÖ

5 Steps to Continuous Process Improvement

5 Steps to Continuous Process Improvement

5 Steps to Continuous Process Improvement

Part One of Creating Well-Defined Processes Series

What if your sales increased from $100,000 to $110,000 per day and your profit increased from $10,000 to $11,000 ñ did you improve by 10%?  The answer might shock you...

Because the answer is no. No improvement occurred.  In fact, your process deteriorated.  Sure, revenue increased, but is this really an improvement?  Letís take a look at the problem in this table.

Letís examine the before and the after scenario.  Say, in the before picture, you have sales of $100,000, fixed costs of $20,000 and variable costs of $70,000. Total expenses amount to $90,000, giving you a gross profit of $10,000. In the after picture, sales increase to $110,000, while variable costs rise to $77,000 in addition to $2,000 in Extra Expenses ñ which give you total expenses of $99,000 and a gross profit of $11,000. In the after picture, remember though, fixed costs are fixed, and do not change with additional revenue.  So you should get more than 10% (11.8% to be exact) profit from 10% growth.

Extra Expenses Prevent Process Improvement

Here we have the before and the after scenario.  You can see that fixed costs are fixed, and do not change with additional revenue.  So you should get more than 10% (11.8% to be exact) profit from 10% growth.

And notice that in order to maintain a 10% profit we have to spend $2,000 in Extra Expenses.  These Extra Expenses represent your process inefficiencies.  These expenses could be sales discounts, travel, overtime, or something else. The names don't really matter.  What does matter is that we are not improving.

Process Evolution Enables Improvement

Improvement results from process evolution, not from an increase in scale.  Whatís the difference?  Scale increases when we hire another person, increase expenses, or purchase more assets in order to acquire or service more business.  Process evolution occurs when we change the process and as a result can release hidden capacity and service more business without adding any costs - and this is a form of efficiency.  You can measure efficiency with the formula:

Efficiency = Output / Costs

But process evolution is about more than just changing costs.  It is about changing time, increasing process velocity, and getting more output from the costs you already have.  Cutting costs, by itself, does not evolve a process.  In fact, reducing costs, without properly understanding how those costs relate to the process, can actually decrease process evolution (devolution).  Let's review an exampleÖ

A Cost Reduction and Procedures Training Case Study

A company decreases costs by switching suppliers and using cheaper materials for their manufacturing process.  Now the purchasing department is happy they are saving money.  The bottom line is starting to look better as profits initially increase.  And so this improved the process, right?  Well...

But then complaints start rolling in from the field.  Products are breaking down faster.  Technical support costs rise, and customers start reducing their orders.  Not only do profits evaporate, but customer goodwill does too.  To offset this, your first reaction might be to switch back to the old supplier. This is much easier and it fixes the immediate problem, but it won't recapture the lost sales, customers and damage to the companyís reputation.

But, again, you need to focus on the most important issue.  There is a limit to the amount of costs one can reduce in any process ñ zero.  You canít reduce costs below zero.  On the other hand, there is no limit to the process potential we can achieve.  Process evolution concerns the numerator (the output), not the denominator (the costs) in the efficiency equation above.

Change in Process Evolution = New Output / Old Output

(Assuming costs are held constant)

By focusing on process evolution instead of costs we can continue to increase our output forever.  We just have to make sure that the output increases faster than the costs. Then what we have is incremental improvement.  But what procedure can use to achieve this?

Process Training

Itís all about collecting feedback to set the right priorities for your change process.  You need feedback to drive the change process.  The more feedback you get the better you will be able to evolve your process.  So letís take a look at what your change process needs to include.

Feedback Records with Deficiency Notations

Trend Analysis

Corrective Action Process and Criteria for action

Audit Process

Management Review Process

And then ask yourself the following questions about your change process:

Are process feedback records created?

Have the feedback records been analyzed for process deficiencies?

Are the deficiencies analyzed for statistical significance?

Are the deficiencies of statistical significance written up for corrective action?

Is corrective/preventive action implemented?

Is there an objective review of all processes to ensure the change process is working?

Does management review all findings to ensure the change process is working -- and that processes are evolving to meet or exceed organizational requirements?

Next Week: Business Modeling

With these thoughts in mind, you can see how important it is to first define continuous improvement and note how it can actually affect your business.  But you can't gather feedback from all processes at once.  If you did, that would generate a process overload.  So where do you start?

Next time we will show you show how when we discuss business modeling.  Business modeling prioritizes which core processes you should improve.  It tells you which processes are most important to not only achieve your company goals - but also to survive as a profitable business.

5 Steps To Releasing Emotional Clutter

5 Steps To Releasing Emotional Clutter

5 Steps To Releasing Emotional Clutter

Be Clutter Free!

5 Steps to Releasing Emotional Clutter

If you imagine that life is a journey we are all on. Some of us have a destination in mind, we have a map and all the equipment and money that we need to get us there. Some of us have no idea where we are going and few resources but we are perfectly content with that, we just want to have an adventure and enjoy the journey.

On our travels we can encounter challenges that slow us down or change our course. Sometimes we let the challenges get us down, they make our journey less enjoyable and sometimes the obstacles stop us altogether, we feel stuck, unable to continue on the journey at all. This is what emotional clutter does to us.

This article is about how we can deal with those challenges and obstacles.

Step One: Identify Your Emotional Clutter

Start a list of your gripes, moans, fears, anxieties, complaints anger, anything that springs to mind. Allow as much time as needed on this and keep adding during the week as other things crop up.

The most important thing to remember here is that the purpose of the exercise is to identify not to immerse yourself in negative emotions, to unearth whatís there so that we can shine a light onto it. So donít dwell on the negative feelings. If you do get emotional or bogged down, take a breather, go for a walk, a sleep, read, watch tv and come back to the list later on.

Itís important to be honest even if you feel a little uncomfortable. When I did my list there were some feelings that I felt very guilty about.

Step 2: How Would You Like to Feel?

Now comes the juicy bit ñ the bit that starts to unstuck the vile sludge of negativity. Take each one of your moans in turn and write exactly how you would like it to be and why. Get into the feeling place. Even if the things are in the past or you feel you canít do anything about them, it doesnít matter, just identify how you would have liked things to have been. How you would like things to be now. Keep all your language positive, about what you want, not what you donít want.

Itís important again to be very honest. What do you really want? It does not matter if it seems to be in the realm of fantasy.

This is your Well, What Do I Want? list. Treasure it. You will be adding to it and using it to build more positivity.

You have taken your first steps on your new journey.

Step 3: What ëCouldí You Do Now?

Go back to your Well, What Do I Want? list. Take each item in turn and ask yourself this question:

In order to fully release my negative feelings and embrace the positive intention thatís here, what could I do next?

Itís important to understand that it doesnít mean that you ëhaveí to do something it just means that you ëcouldí do it. Itís about opening the possibilities up. About opening the door and shinning the torch in. There is no pressure here, no list of ëmust doísí

Some of the things that come up will be practical, others emotional. Here are some examples from my list:

ïforgive him

ïforgive myself

ïget a gardener

ïenjoy the chocolate

ïwrite a letter

ïask for some advice

All that you need to make sure is that all the possibilities are ones that would make you feel good or better in some way.

It very likely that by now you will have new impetus and resolve to take positive steps. You may have a strong desire to look forwards rather than back. Go with it and enjoy yourself!

Step 4: Time for Action?

Finding ways that we could declutter our emotions is liberating and makes us feel more positive. Taking positive actions is even more powerful.

Which item on your list could you do first?

Which item on your list could be the easiest to do?

Which item on your list could be the most powerful to do?

Take the steps you need to start making yourself feel better.

Step 5: Releasing Unconscious Emotions

This step encourages us to look at the next level of our emotions: the unconscious.

Are there areas where you feel very stuck and nothing seems to create a shift for you?

Becoming an Observer

By becoming the observer of your own feelings you will come to a greater understanding of yourself and be better able to let things go as negative emotions release their grip on you.

I first came across the notion of being an ëobserverí in Thresholds of the Mind by Bill Harris. Bill calls it, Finding the Witness. The idea is that Ö.

ìpart of you observes what is happening even as it happens. When you observe in this way you feel as if you are standing outside yourself and observing how youíre feeling, what you are doing, and how youíre interacting with your environment.î

You learn incredible amounts about yourself by doing this and after a really short space of time you begin to have a greater understanding of your emotions. This gives you choice.

Become an observer. What do you learn?

Learning EFT

Another technique which can really help to clear unconscious blocks is EFT. This stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. This is free for everyone to learn and can be truly miraculous so check it out at: www.emo-free.com. Whatís wonderful about this technique is how easy and completely emotionally painless it can be.
